Overview

Chromebooks are lightweight, web-based devices designed primarily for internet-connected tasks such as accessing online courses, creating documents, participating in video meetings, and collaborating using cloud-based tools. While they are an excellent option for many academic activities, they are not the same as traditional Windows or Mac computers.

Understanding what a Chromebook can and cannot do will help you avoid common issues and ensure you have the right device for your coursework.

What Is a Chromebook?

A Chromebook is a laptop that runs Google ChromeOS operating system. Unlike traditional computers, Chromebooks are designed to work primarily with web applications and cloud storage rather than locally installed software.

Most of your work is expected to be completed online using applications such as:

  • Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides
  • Microsoft 365 Online
  • Zoom or Microsoft Teams (web or app)
  • Other browser-based learning tools

Common Chromebook Misconceptions

Misconception: A Chromebook works exactly like a Windows or Mac computer.

Reality: While many everyday tasks are similar, Chromebooks have important limitations. Some desktop software and hardware features available on Windows or macOS are not supported.

Misconception: I can install any software I need.

Reality: Many programs designed for Windows or macOS cannot be installed on a Chromebook.

Examples may include:

  • Specialized engineering or scientific software
  • Some multimedia editing applications
  • Certain programming environments
  • Software that requires administrator installation

If your course requires specific software, review the course requirements before the semester begins to verify that it is compatible with ChromeOS.

Misconception: My Chromebook has plenty of storage.

Reality: Most Chromebooks include limited internal storage (often 32–128 GB).

They are designed to store files in the cloud rather than on the device itself. Large downloads, videos, or software installations can quickly use the available storage.

To conserve space:

  • Save files to Google Drive or OneDrive.
  • Delete unnecessary downloaded files.
  • Avoid storing large media files locally unless required. 

Misconception: Everything is saved on my Chromebook.

Reality: Most work created on a Chromebook is automatically saved to cloud storage, not the device itself.

Depending on the application you’re using, your files may be stored in:

  • Google Drive
  • Microsoft OneDrive
  • Brightspace submissions
  • Other cloud storage services

This allows you to access your work from another computer if needed.

Common Chromebook Challenges

Students sometimes encounter tasks that are easier—or only possible—on a traditional computer.

Examples include:

  • Installing course-required desktop software
  • Connecting to certain printers
  • Using specialized peripherals
  • Running software that requires Windows or macOS
  • Working with applications that do not support ChromeOS

If your course requires any of these activities, you may need access to a Windows or Mac computer.

Printing from a Chromebook

Printing from a Chromebook is supported by many modern printers, but setup may differ from Windows or macOS.

If you cannot connect to your printer:

  • Verify that your printer supports Chromebook or ChromeOS printing.
  • Ensure both devices are connected to the same network (if applicable).
  • Refer to your printer manufacturer’s support documentation.
  • Consider using a campus computer if printing is required and your printer is not compatible.

When You May Need a Windows or Mac Computer

A Windows or Mac computer may be required if your course involves:

  • Installing specialized software
  • Running applications that are not browser-based
  • Advanced video or audio editing
  • Certain programming or development tools
  • Software with specific operating system requirements

Always review your course technology requirements before classes begin.
