How to Use the Instant Messaging Tool (SUNY-Wide Instance)

Introduction

The instant messaging tool in Brightspace is an alternative way to communicate with your students and colleagues.

Please Note: The Instant Messaging tool will not be available on the SUNY Empire Brightspace site. Beginning in Fall 2024, this tool will be disabled.

Using the Instant Messaging Tool

Above the navbar at the top of every page, locate the Message Alerts Icon (shaped like an envelope) and click on it. You will have the option of sending an instant message or an email. Click Instant Message to open a new window.

From this new window, you can:

  1. View and sort new and old messages.
  2. Set your view preferences.
  3. Search for and add or remove users, friends and classlists.
  4. If you have more than one course, click on classlist and select the view option to switch between courses.
  5. Instructors can choose to send a mass message to the whole class or send individual messages by selecting classlist, then selecting users.
