DP Planner Profile Creation
Creating a new degree program using the Start New Degree Plan button starts with profile creation.
NEW: Effective 12/19/2022 Degree, Registered Area of Study/Major and Mentor will default to the Banner values at the time of DP creation. These values can be changed in the profile page if needed.
Figure 1 Example of DP Planner profile page with degree, registered area, and mentor/advisor fields pre-populated with student data from Banner.
External Sources of Credit
The DP Planner profile page is also where external sources of transfer credit are listed.
NEW: Effective 12/19/2022, credit sources are automatically created in the DP Planner profile page and any quarter credit transcript sources are identified.
Only sources for which official documentation has been received in Admissions and entered into Banner will be listed. Sources not yet received, and/or anticipated sources of external credit may be manually entered by the mentor or student.
Both credit-by-evaluation (CBE) sources (such as CLEP or PLE credit) and transfer credit from regionally-accredited institutions will automatically fall under the “Transcript Credit Sources” column. CBE credit sources may be moved to the “Credit By Evaluation” column utilizing the “Move this source to other column” functionality.

Individual Transfer Course Entry
NEW: Effective 12/19/2022 for any NEW Degree Program created, successfully completed student transcript credit entered in Banner is imported into the DP automatically.
All successfully completed courses are copied into the General Learning column of the Degree Program with the equivalent SUNY Empire credit. (Note: The General Learning column currently has a 30-course limit per transcript. Transcripts that exceed 30 courses will also use the Concentration column in the initial import).
All transfer course attributes (Gen Ed, Intro/Adv, Liberal) for evaluated* courses are imported. See the Note about evaluated transfer credit section below for more information.
The mentor/advisor and student can move courses between columns, remove any courses not being used in the DP, and update course titles if necessary.
Transfer credits received after the initial creation of the degree program may be added manually to an existing degree program using the “Add Transcript Studies” button found in the “Transcript Studies” section of the DP.

*Note about evaluated transfer credit
In DP Planner, when you press the "Add Transcript Credit Studies" button, coursework that has already been evaluated will have notes listed between the credit total and the grade.
- If no note exists, the course has not yet been evaluated.
- If a course has not yet been evaluated, you may edit the course information to include the appropriate attributes.
- For more information about transfer credit at SUNY Empire see Transfer Credit Quick Facts for Mentors

SUNY Empire Course Entry: Completed & In-progress Coursework
NEW: Effective 12/19/2022 all in-progress and completed SUNY Empire courses are imported into the Degree Program automatically upon DP creation.
SUNY Empire courses completed or in-progress after the point of DP creation are added using the “Cmplt/In-progress Crse” link.
- Courses completed in or after Fall 2018 will include the course number in the DP entry
- Courses completed before Fall 2018 will not include the course in the DP entry
- All course titles using this link will match the Banner title exactly, and may include abbreviations
- All attributes attached to the course will show automatically (liberal, non-liberal, general education)

SUNY Empire Course Entry: Planned Coursework
Use the links in the “ESC Studies” section of DP Planner to add the courses students will take to complete degree requirements at SUNY Empire, including:
- Catalog courses
- Totally Independent Studies (TIS) or Cross Registration
- Electives and General Education placeholders
Catalog Courses
Use the Catalog links to add or update a planned ESC course from the catalog with single or multiple course selection options.
- Sorted by subject and course number
- Searchable by subject, course number, or keywords in the course title
NEW: Effective 12/19/2022 use the “add catalog courses” link to add multiple SUNY Empire courses to the DP at once.
Single course selection using the “Catalog Crse” link:

Multi-course selection using the “Add catalog courses” link:

Totally Independent Studies (TIS) and Cross Registration
Use the “TISorXreg” link to add planned TISs or course(s) for which the student plans on cross-registering.
- For planned TISs, identify subject and course number (which indicates course level) using the radio button
- For planned cross-registration select XRGS (SUNY school) or XRGO (non-SUNY school) as the subject, and pick the course number to match level at other institution
- Once selected, update titles (max 30 characters), credits and liberal/non-liberal indicators as needed
- Previously completed TIS or X-reg, should be added to DP Planner using the Complt/In-progress Crse link

Elective and General Education Placeholders
Use the “Elective” link when a student doesn’t need, or hasn’t chosen, a specific course to complete requirements. This indicates the student has some flexibility in the course they choose, while setting parameters for attributes that the course will need to have, such as liberal, advanced, or specific general education area.
- Allows the addition of a placeholder Elective or Gen Ed course at either the “Intro” or “Advanced” level
- Electives and General Education placeholders calculate into totals like other courses
