How to Use LUMI to Generate Assignment and Discussion Ideas in Brightspace

Introduction

LUMI is a new Brightspace tool that provides AI-powered suggestions to help instructors create learning activities more efficiently. With LUMI, you can generate assignment ideas, discussion prompts, criteria, and questions based on your course content. This article addresses using LUMI to generate Discussion and Assignment ideas in your Brightspace course using LUMI.

How to Access LUMI Suggestions

  1. On the course navbar navigate to Course Menu, choose Content.
  2. Navigate to the module where you want to add an assignment or discussion
  3. Select Add Existing or Upload/Create

How to Generate Discussion Prompts or Assignment Prompts Using LUMI

  1. After choosing “New Discussion or New Assignment” under Upload/Create,” in New Topic editing area select “Generate Discussion Ideas”. The features of the tool are as follows:
    • This AI tool will generate 3-5 possible ideas based on the HTML and document content in the current module.
    • After generating, you can select an AI generated idea to insert into your description field where you can edit it to suit your specific context.
    • Content size is limited to 8,000 characters. Once this character limit is reached, no further characters will be considered. The character limit may get exhausted when selecting a large activity or multiple activities.
    • Only certain activity types of support idea generation. Supported activity types include assignments, quizzes, discussions, HTML files, and most file types including PDF.
  2. Choose the number of ideas from 3, 4 or 5.
  3. Select the Bloom’s Taxonomy level: Create, Evaluate, Analyze, Apply, Understand or Remember.
  4. Choose Content Source to “Include all activities in the module “or “Select the activities you wish to include in your idea.
  5. Choose Generate Ideas.
    Please note: The suggested ideas will appear, choose the ones you prefer.
  6. Select Insert.
  7. Edit the topic details. Refine the AI content if necessary and customize instructions, grading, rubric, and due dates.
  8. Select Save and Close.
