Introduction

Chat messages can be sent between individual users, among groups, and within meetings. This article covers moderation of a chat's notifications, participants, and history.

Please Note: To “mute” a chat will disable notifications for future messages; to “leave” a chat will disable all future messages from appearing.

Mute chat notifications

  1. Click the “Chat” icon on the left-hand menu of the app.
  2. Hover your cursor next to the chat you want to mute, then click the “more options” icon (ellipsis). A drop-down menu will appear.
  3. Select “Mute”. All notifications will stop until you return and select “Unmute.”

Leave chat

  1. Click the “Chat” icon along the left-hand menu of the app.
  2. Hover your cursor next to the chat you wish to leave, then click the “more options” icon (ellipsis). A drop-down menu will appear.
  3. Select “Leave”. You will no longer receive or view future messages in that chat. However, chat history for messages sent before leaving will remain visible.

Remove a participant from a chat

In MS Teams, if a guest is invited to a recurring meeting, they will have access to the meeting’s chat (even if they are a guest to the university or a university member invited as a guest to a specific meeting). They can post messages to participants in the meeting, including those not currently attending, and will see chat history after joining the meeting. They will not see messages sent before their initial join.

Please Note: Guests must be removed from the meeting chat after their participation; otherwise, they will continue to receive notifications and messages. Any member of the meeting can remove a guest:

  1. Open the meeting chat you wish to moderate.
  2. Select the MS Teams icon showing the participant count; this displays a list of all participants.
  3. Hover your mouse next to the participant’s name you wish to remove. An “X” icon will appear.
  4. Click the “X” icon; the participant will be removed and a notification will appear in the chat history confirming the removal.
