MS Teams Creating, Joining, and Leaving a team

A review of how to create a team, edit a team, join a team that exists, add new members and owners, and leave a team in MS Teams.

Creating a Team

1. Click on the Teams icon along the menu options on the left-hand side of the screen.

2. Select the Join or create team button.

3. Click the Create team button.

4. Click on the icon for the type of team you would like to create:

a. Class

b. Professional Learning Community

c. Staff

d. Other

5. Complete form in pop-up box:

a. Name of team (the suffix -ESC-Group is automatically added for you).

b. Description of team (optional).

c. Privacy (how visible your team is to other users).

6. Click Next button when form is complete.

Editing a Team

1. Click on the more options icon (looks like an ellipsis) next to the team you want to edit.

2. Select the Edit team option from the drop-down menu.

3. Make the edits to the team name, description, privacy setting (public or private), or team avatar that you need completed.

4. Click on the Update button to save the edits made.

Joining a Team with a Code

1. Click on the Teams icon on the left-hand side of the app.

2. Select the Join or create team button.*** Graphical user interface, application, Teams

3. Enter the team code provided to you by the owner.

4. Select the Join team button that appears after you enter the code.

5. Click on the Teams icon. You should now see your team listed.

***Guests can not join a team with code. They must be added manually by a team owner.

Joining a Team with a Link

1. Click on the link that was provided to you by the team owner*** (you will be taken to the MS Teams app. If you’re not signed in, you will be prompted to do so with your university username and password).

2. Click the Join button.

3. Click on the Teams icon along the left-hand side of the screen. You should now see your team listed.

***Guests can not join a team with a link at this time. They must be added manually by a team owner.

Adding a Member to a Team as an Owner

1. Enter the team that you want to add a new member to.

2. Click on the “more actions” icon […] next to the team’s name to open a drop-down menu.

3. Select the Manage team option on the drop-down menu, a menu will appear will appear on the right-hand side of the app. It opens to the “Members” section by default.

4. Select the Add member button that appears under the “Members” section, a pop-up box will appear.

5. Type the person’s name that you want to add.

6. Click the Add button that activates once the person’s name is fully entered (the person’s name will appear below the entry box once added).

7. Click the Close button to return to your team.

Adding a Member to a Team with a Code as an Owner

1. Enter the team you want to provide members with an invitation to join.

2. Click on the “more actions” icon […] next to the team’s name to open a drop-down menu.

3. Select the Manage team option on the drop-down menu, a menu will appear on the right-hand side of the app.

4. Click on the “Settings” section.

5. Open the “Team Code” header by clicking the black arrow next to the label.

6. Select the Generate button under the “Team Code” header. Your code will appear with options to “Reset” the code, “Remove” the code, and “Copy” to share the code for future users.

7. Provide new members with the copied code that they can use to join the team independently. You will need to accept all requests.

8. Repeat steps 1-3.

9. Click on the “Pending requests” section.

10. Select “Accept” or “Deny” for each request.

Adding a Member to a Team with a Link as an Owner

1. Enter the team you want to provide members with an invitation to join.

2. Click on the “more options” icon […] in the top right corner of the General channel in your team. This opens a drop-down menu.

3. Select the “Get link to channel” option, a pop-up box will appear with the link.

4. Add the link to your clipboard by clicking the Copy button.

5. Provide new members with link by pasting it into a communication, so they can join the team independently. You will need to accept all requests.

6. Repeat steps 1-3.

7. Click on the “Pending requests” section.

8. Select “Accept” or “Deny” for each request.

Making a Member an Owner of a Team

1. Enter the team that you want to add a new member to.

2. Click on the “more options” icon […] next to the team’s name to open a drop-down menu.

3. Select the Manage team option on the drop-down menu, a menu will appear will appear on the right-hand side of the app. It opens to the “Members” section by default.

4. Scroll down to the member that you want to make an owner’s name.

5. Click on the drop-down box next to their new that currently says “Member.”

6. Select the “Owner” option in the drop-down box.

7. Return to the “Members” section and your selection is automatically saved. The member will be alerted that they are now an owner.

Leaving a Team as a Member

1. Enter the team that you want to add a new member to.

2. Click on the “more options” icon […] next to the team’s name to open a drop-down menu.

3. Select the “Leave the team” option on the drop-down menu.

Removing a Team Member as an Owner

1. Enter the team that you want to add a new member to.

2. Click on the “more options” icon […] next to the team’s name to open a drop-down menu.

3. Select the Manage team option on the drop-down menu, a menu will appear will appear on the right-hand side of the app. It opens to the “Members” section by default.

4. Scroll down the list to the member that you wish to remove.

5. Click the “X” that appears next to that member’s name. Their removal will be processed and saved.
