Introduction

Brightspace offers the option of overriding a quiz's settings for individual students if needed. You can override the following settings:

  • Due date
  • Dates available
  • Time allowed
  • Number of attempts allowed

In the process below, you will note that there are two options for providing special access to a quiz. The first is a process for allowing selected users special access to a quiz, and this option is best for providing accommodations to students who have official accommodations provided by the Office of Accessibility Resources and Services. The second option allows only users with special access to see a quiz.

Basic Override Steps

  1. Go to the course landing page,
  2. Select Course Menu in the navbar.
  3. Select Quizzes in the drop-down menu that appears,
  4. Select the drop-down menu located to the right of the quiz that needs to be edited and select the Edit option from the menu.
  5. Select the Availability Dates & Restrictions menu located on the right side of the screen and select the Manage Special Access link.

    • Allow only users with special access to see this quiz: this option is ideal when the quiz is only available to select students.
  7. After selecting who is receiving the special access to the quiz, select the Add Users to Special Access button.

      • The No time limit option allows instructors to provide unlimited time to students who have this override access.
    • The When The Time Limit Expires option allows instructors the following options, select one:
      • Automatically submit the quiz attempt
      • Flag as "exceeded time limit" and allow the learner to continue working
      • Do nothing: the time limit is not enforced
    • In the Attempts Allowed drop-down box, select the number of attempts the student(s) are allowed as part of their special access. Select the desired attempts and select the Apply button found just to the right of the drop-down box.
      • Note: Optional advanced attempt conditions will appear if a number of attempts from 2-10 is applied.
  10. In the Users section, the course roster is available. Select the check box associated with the student(s) who is slated to receive the overrides.

Adding Timing Accommodations for All Quizzes for an Individual Student

Sometimes you may be asked by a student for additional time to complete a quiz. They may also have an accommodation that requires you to do so. Providing a student with extra time to complete an activity is simple in Brightspace.

To apply extended time to all quizzes for an individual student, follow these steps:

  1. Select Tools from the blue navigation bar, then select Roster.
  2. Select the drop-down menu by the individual student's name and select Edit Accommodations.
  3. A pop-up window will appear where the following can be completed:
    • Under the Quizzes section, the first option that can be updated is Timing.
      • Check the Modify Time Limit box and you can either adjust the Multiplier of original quiz time or the Extra time options.
  4. Select the Save button to save the updated timing accommodation.
