Introduction

The visual table of contents widget provides a graphical display of the main modules in your course. It also shows students a summary of their progress through the topics in the modules if this feature has been enabled within the content pages. You can customize the images displayed in the tiles.

About the Visual Table of Contents Widget

The visual table of contents widget displays "flip tiles" for each top-level module in your course. Each tile shows the following:

  • In the upper left corner, an icon of an "i" appears if you have included a description in the module. When a user clicks on the "i," the tile "flips" over and displays the first few lines of the description.
  • In the upper right corner, two triangles appear.  These link to the next uncompleted topic in the module.
  • Behind the "i" icon and the two triangles is an image. The image is either a default image for the course, or is the first image in the description of the module.
  • In the middle is the title of the module. Like the two triangles, the title links to the next uncompleted topic in the module.
  • At the bottom is a status bar and text showing students how many topics in the module have been completed out of the total (if the progress tracking has been enabled on the content pages).

How to Change the Image on a Tile

  1. From the course homepage, click on Course Menu and select Content.
  2. Select the module whose image you want to change.
  3. Click on the description to put it in "edit" mode and position your cursor where you want the image to appear in the description.
  4. Click on the image icon in the editing ribbon. The Add a file dialog box will appear. You can upload an image from your computer, enter a URL to an image, or choose an image from the course offering files.
  5. Click Add and enter alternative text for the image as needed.
  6. Click the Update button to save your changes.

Note:

  • If you have more than one image in your description, the first image is the one that will appear on the tile in the visual table of contents widget.
  • Depending on the size and shape of the image, it may appear cropped on the tile.
