Introduction
The Quick Eval widget allows instructors to see learning activities and assessments that have been submitted for evaluation. This includes discussions, assignments and quizzes that have manual items. Quick Eval does not include integrated third-party assessments such as those from Cengage, Pearson, or McGraw-Hill. Note: Quick Eval does not work with group assignments.
Accessing Quick Eval
- Log into your Brightspace account
- Select the course for which you would like to view assessments
- The Quick Eval widget can be found below the Visual Table of Contents (TOC)
- Note: Quick Eval can also be found by selecting Tools in the navbar.
- Select Quick Eval and it will show items that require evaluation in either submission or activity listing. You can also search for an activity name. There is also an option to view Multi-Course Quick Eval if you are teaching more than one course, however we recommend using quick eval from the individual course view.
Note: Only activities that are attached to the course gradebook will appear in Quick Eval.
Grading Items through Quick Eval
- If viewing by activity, you can see how many students have completed the activity, how many have been evaluated, and how many grades have been published. By hovering over any of these metrics, you are able to select Evaluate All, Submission List, and More Actions.
- More Actions allows you to either publish all, or to dismiss until. The Dismiss Activity allows you to hide the item from Quick Eval until either the next submission, a specific date, or forever. To view dismissed activities, select the three dots in the right-hand-corner of the page above the search box. This menu also allows you to view multi-course quick eval.
- Selecting Evaluate All for an activity opens a page with two columns, the left-hand column has the submission, and the right-hand column includes a grading rubric, overall grade, overall feedback, and options for audio/video feedback, or attaching files for assignments.
- When you have completed grading, saved draft comments or downloaded files for all submissions in an individual activity, it will be removed automatically from the Quick Eval view. If you need to review work that is no longer listed in Quick Eval, navigate to the activity type. The specific choice will depend on the activity type.
- For assignments choose View Submissions and then Go to Evaluation for the student grade you wish to review.
- For Discussions choose Assess Topic.
- If a student posts new work (example: posts a discussion reply), then that activity will reappear in Quick Eval as a new submission.
Important Note: When viewing submissions in the Brightspace file viewer you may see that spacing and alignment are different from the spacing and alignment in the actual file document - this is a known issue with the viewer. The actual file that was uploaded is not altered and retains all original formatting and will display correctly when downloaded and viewed in the associated software. For example: A Microsoft Word file will look different in the Brightspace file viewer. If citation style is part of the assessment you will need to download the file to accurately evaluate formatting.
Quick Eval and the End of Term
Quick Eval will stop functioning 30 days after the end of a term. If you have students with an incomplete grade that submit work 30 days after the end of a term you will need to use an alternative method for entering grades such as evaluating the activity in the gradebook,
Quick Eval will be available for up to 30 days past the end of a term. If there are no students with an incomplete grade in the course, Quick Eval will become unavailable when the course status is changed to Term Ended. For courses that have a student with an incomplete grade, Quick Eval will be available for the full 30 days after the term end. If there are students with incomplete grades in the course after 30 days past the end of the term, please note that Quick Eval will not be available to show any new work submitted by those students. Grades can be entered using the grading tool by choosing an ungraded item in the gradebook.
