Introduction
The My Awards tool enables merit-based awards granted by instructors of a course and for Brightspace discover courses. There are two types of awards: Badges and Certificates.
About Badges
Badges are awarded based on any criteria determined by the instructor or Discover course subject matter experts.
List of Features of Badges
- Provide digital markers that represent accomplishment throughout a course or program.
- Awarded for achievements that can contribute to the type of work ethic that results in a passing grade.
- Example accomplishments to earn a badge:
- Posting 15 discussion posts in the first month of a course.
- Perfect attendance.
- Academic excellence.
About Certificates
Certificates are awarded based on criteria determined by the instructor or department. A key distinguishing feature associated with certificates is they include a PDF document students can print or email. Certificates typically indicate a statement of completion or award at the end of a program or a required discover course.

- Typically indicate a statement of completion awarded at the end of a course.
View Awards in Student Profiles
Faculty can view a student badges or certificates in the student profile. Note that a student must choose to share an award before it appears in their profile.
Steps to View Student Awards
- Select the Roster from the Tools menu
- Scroll in the class list to the student profile you wish to view
- Click on the icon in the Image column to view the student profile
- Badges and Certificates that the student has chosen to share appear in the Awards Showcase
- Select (click on) a badge or certificate for information on
- The course associated with the award
- A description of the award
- The issue date
- The issuer
- Evidence of completion
