Overview

The university offers two different Chromebook models. They are the Dell Chromebook 3120 and the HP Chromebook 14” Touchscreen.

Both of these Chromebook models support an external monitor and a wireless mouse. The difference is simply how you connect them. Both can use network printer/scanners.

Dell Chromebook 3120

The newer Dell Chromebook 3120 models include:

  • USB-C port (supports video output)
  • USB-A port
  • Headphone jack

Connect the Chromebook's USB-C port to a USB-C to HDMI adapter. Then connect an HDMI cable from the adapter to the external monitor.

Once connected:

  2. Select Device, then select Displays.
  3. Choose Mirror or Extend the display.

  • Select the mouse and click Pair.

  • Use a USB-C to HDMI adapter.

Wireless mouse

Exactly the same as the Dell:

  • Plug in the USB receiver or
  • Pair a Bluetooth mouse through the Bluetooth options in Settings.

Choosing a Printer/Scanner for a Chromebook

When choosing a printer/scanner for a Chromebook, look for a model that supports Chromebook compatibility and works with Wi-Fi printing, since Chromebooks are designed to print directly over a network rather than through traditional printer drivers. An all-in-one printer that includes printing, scanning, and copying can provide the best value and convenience. Consider print quality, speed, paper handling, and operating costs, especially the price of replacement ink or toner cartridges. If you scan documents regularly, make sure the scanner supports wireless scanning or offers a companion app that works with ChromeOS. Popular brands such as HP, Epson, Brother, and Canon offer many Chromebook-compatible models, so checking the manufacturer's specifications and customer reviews can help you find a reliable option that meets your needs and budget.

Connecting external hard drives, USB flash drives and SD/microSD cards

Most Chromebooks work with the following storage devices:

  • USB flash drives. These plug into the USB-A or USB-C port. If your Chromebook only has USB-C ports you may need an adapter.
  • SD or microSD cards. Many Chromebooks have a built-in card reader.
  • External hard drives. Both solid-state and traditional hard drives will usually work if they are formatted correctly. These plug into the USB-A or USB-C port. If your Chromebook only has USB-C ports you may need an adapter.

Before you connect a storage device, make sure it is formatted as FAT32, exFAT, or ext4—file types supported by Chrome OS. If your device is not recognized, you may need to format it using the Chromebook's built-in tools.

How to safely eject external storage

Always eject your external storage before removing it. Open the Files app, click the eject icon next to your device’s name, and wait for the notification that it’s safe to remove. This helps prevent data loss or corruption (Note: this is true for all computer)

How to format an external drive for your Chromebook

If your device isn’t showing up, it may need to be reformatted:

  • Plug the drive into your Chromebook.
  • Open the Files app.
  • Right-click the device name and choose Format device.
  • Follow the prompts. This will erase everything, so back up your files first.
