About Adding questions

Adding questions at selected points in a video can make the viewing experience more interactive and help you evaluate participant understanding.

Available question types:

  • Multiple Choice
  • True/False
  • Reflection Point
  • Open-Ended Question

Step 1: Open the Quiz Editor

Before adding questions, open the video quiz in the quiz editor. If you have not created a video quiz before, first follow the process for starting a new video quiz and opening its editing tools.

Step 2: Insert a Question

  • In the quiz editor, move the playback marker to the location where you want the question to appear. You can drag the marker along the timeline or play the video until you reach the appropriate point.
  • When the marker is positioned, select + Add a Question in the video player.
  • Choose the type of question you want to create:
    • Multiple Choice: Create a question with one correct response and up to four possible answers. If additional answer choices are required, contact your Kaltura representative for assistance.
    • True/False: Participants choose between True and False. A green check mark identifies the correct response. True is selected as the correct answer by default; select False if needed.
    • Reflection Point: Pauses the video and presents participants with a prompt for reflection.
    • Open-Ended Question: Allows participants to enter a written response. The question may contain up to 400 characters, and the response may contain up to 250 characters. Participants must complete open-ended questions before submitting the quiz. These responses are not scored automatically; the quiz owner reviews them, assigns a score, and may provide comments. This functionality requires the Quiz module to be active and the QuestionsV3 setting to be set to Yes.
  • Enter the question text.
  • Add the correct response, when required.
  • Enter the remaining answer choices.
    • Each applicable question must include at least two answer options.
    • Select the + icon to create additional choices.
    • To remove an answer, move your pointer over it and select X. An answer identified as correct cannot be removed.
  • Change the order of the answers, if desired, by using the shuffle control or by dragging the handle beside an answer choice.
  • Select Save.
  • Repeat the process for each additional question you want to include.
    • Note: Try to leave enough space between questions on the timeline so their cue points do not overlap.
  • When you have finished adding questions, select Done.
    • Note: Quiz questions are represented by blue icons along the video timeline.

From the timeline, you can:

  • Hover over an icon to see a preview of the question.
  • Select an icon to edit the question.
  • Drag an icon to move the question to another point in the video.

Important: For a better viewing experience, consider positioning the last question close to the end of the video. This can encourage participants to continue watching through the final portion of the recording.

Provide Hints and Explanations

Questions can also include optional information that supports participant learning.

A Hint offers additional guidance that may help a participant determine the answer. Using a hint does not change the participant's score.

A Why explanation provides additional context about the correct response. Participants can see this information after submitting the quiz when Include Answers is enabled in the Scores settings.

Add a Hint

  1. Select the lamp icon.
  2. Choose Hint.
  3. Enter the supporting information in the text field.
  4. Select Apply.

When a question contains a hint, participants will see a Show Hint option beneath the question.

Add an Explanation

  1. Select the lamp icon.
  2. Choose Why.
  3. Enter an explanation of why the answer is correct.
  4. Select Apply.

Preview the Video Quiz

  1. Select Preview to see how the quiz will appear and function for participants.
  2. Select the "X" when you are ready to leave preview mode.
  3. Select Done to finish editing the quiz.
