What are Channels?

Channels are user curated media collections that allow users of LEARNscape to share content with a particular audience. They are best used to organize related videos into a central location. When you own a channel, you can grant other members of the university permission levels that will allow them to contribute to, moderate, or manage a channel that you have created. Additional steps can be taken to make a channel accessible to every member of the university (faculty/staff and students) or to the general public. This article will detail how to create, edit, and publicize a channel.

Create a New Channel

  1. From the LEARNscape site, click the user drop-down and select My Channels.
  2. Click on the Create Channel button.
  3. Fill out the appropriate metadata information.
  4. Click the Save button. Your new channel will now be listed in My Channels.

Edit Details of Your Channel

  1. From the LEARNscape site, click the user drop-down and select My Channels.
  2. Click on the title of the channel you would like to edit.
  3. In the top right corner, click the Actions drop-down and select Edit.
  4. Once in the Edit window, click on the Details tab. In the Details tab, you can change the title, description, and tags of the channel.
  5. Click the Save button at the bottom of the page after making any changes.

Create or Add Media to a Playlist

The Add to Playlist feature allows you to create a new playlist or add videos to an existing playlist. These playlists can be then be displayed in LEARNscape, embedded into a webpage, or embedded into a Brightspace course. Please note: Once a playlist is embedded into a website, the videos are made accessible to the general public.

Create and Add to a Playlist

  1. Open the LEARNscape video you would like added to a new playlist.
  2. Click the Actions drop-menu that appears below the video and select Add to Playlist.
  3. You have the option to create a new playlist or select an existing one.
    • Create a new playlist: Type the desired playlist name into the field and click the Create button. Then select the new playlist name under Select Playlists.
    • Add to an existing playlist: Check the box for the playlist under Select Playlists.
  4. Click Save.
  5. Add additional videos to the playlist by repeating the process.

Please note: To delete a playlist, you must open your My Playlists section found under the User Menu.

Requesting a Public Channel

By default, all channels are "Private". Private channels are only accessible to the channel owner/creator and any members that have been assigned to the channel. In order to publicize a channel, please submit a service desk ticket at esc.edu/service-desk.

Channel Types

  • Private: Accessible only to members of the channel. If no members are added, the channel is only accessible to the channel owner.
  • Restricted:Accessible to all members of the university (faculty/staff and students) when they are logged into LEARNscape.
  • Open:Accessible to the general public and all member of the university. LEARNscape administrators can contribute media to the channel.
  • Public: Accessible to the general public and all members of the university.

Managing Channel Membership

What is Managing Channel Membership?

Channels are a main feature of the LEARNscape site and they are best used to share similar content among specific colleagues and students. When you own or manage a channel, you can set other members' permission levels to allow them the ability to contribute, moderate, or manage a channel that you have created. The following information will outline how to manage those you have assigned as members to your channel.

Add Members to a Channel

  1. Click the Channel title to open its Channel page.
  2. In the top right corner, click the Actions drop-down and select Edit. A new window will open.
  3. Once in the Edit window, click on the Members tab. In the Members tab, you can change the default level and add new members.
  4. To add new members to your channel, click on Add Member. A new window will pop up.
  5. Enter the user's name and set his/her permission level. The Permission Levels are listed below.

Channel Permission Levels

  1. Member: Allowed to view content only;
  2. Contributor: Allowed to view, add content only;
  3. Moderator: Allowed to view, add content, and moderate comments;
  4. Manager: In addition to moderating, also allowed to add/delete member;
  5. Owner: In addition to managing, also allowed to transfer ownership of the channel.
  6. To finish, click on the Add button and the new user will be listed as a member of your channel.

Edit an Existing Member's Permission Level

  1. Follow steps 1-4 of "How to Add a New Member."
  2. Once in the Members tab, scroll down to the Members list and click on the small Pencil Icon next to the name of the member whose permission level you want to change.
  3. A drop-down list will appear under Permission. Pick the level and click on the small Save icon to save.

Change a Channel's Ownership

A channel in LEARNscape can only have to ONE channel owner. To transfer ownership of your channel, you must:

  1. Add the user as a member of your channel./li>
  2. In the Members list, click on"Set as Owner" next to the name of the new owner.
  3. You'll be asked if you're sure and would like to proceed. Click on "Yes".
  4. You'll no longer be listed as the "Owner" but you'll still be listed as a Manager.

Remove a Member from a Channel

  1. To remove a member from a channel that you own OR manage, in the "Members" list, click on the "X" icon next to the name of the user that you want to remove.
  2. You'll be asked if you're sure that you want to remove the user as a member. Click on"Yes". The removed user will no longer be listed as a member of your channel.
