Configure Override Access for an Activity Extending Time-Due Date for Students

Relevant to: faculty and staff

Introduction

Sometimes you may be asked by a student for additional time to complete an assignment or quiz. They may also have an accommodation that requires you to do so. Providing a student with extra time to complete an activity is simple in Brightspace.

Configuring Extra Time for a Single Assignment for an Individual Student

These instructions are meant for assignments such as essays, lab reports, and so forth. In order to provide a specific student with extra time:

  1. From your course, select "Course Menu" from the navbar to open the Course Menu dropdown. From there, select "Assignments."
  2. A list of the assignments in your course will be shown here. For the assignment that you need to provide extra time for, select the downward-facing arrow to the right of the name.
  3. From this drop-down menu, select "Edit Assignment."
  4. The Manage Assignments page for this assignment will be active on your screen. On the right side of the screen, select "Availability Dates and Conditions."
  5. Within the Availability Dates and Conditions tab, select "Manage Special Access." This will cause a pop-up window to appear.
  6. In the Manage Special Access pop-up window, select the "Add Users to Special Access" button. This will cause a second pop-up window to appear.
  7. From the Special Access pop-up window, you can adjust the Due Date, Start Date, and End date. Adjust these dates to what is being asked for.
  8. To provide this access to a particular student, you will need to search for their name in the search box under the Users subsection. Select the user from the search results by selecting the checkbox to the left of their name.
  9. Once you have adjusted the dates and selected students for the new access requirements to apply to, select the "Save" button at the bottom of the pop-up window then select "Save and Close" on the next pop-up window.
  10. Select "Back to Manage Assignments" at the top of the screen to return to the main Assignments page. An icon of a key should be next to the arrow you selected to move to the Manage Assignments page. This will indicate that special access has been granted to this Assignment.

Adjusting Individual Quizzes

These instructions will cover both changing due dates for quizzes as well as providing extra time within quizzes.

  1. From your course, select "Course Menu" from the navbar to open the Course Menu drop-down. From here, select "Quizzes."
  2. A list of quizzes in your courses will be shown here. On this page, select the downward arrow to the right of the name of the quiz you need to provide special access to.
  3. From this dropdown menu, select "Edit" to move to the Edit Quiz window.
  4. Select the "Restrictions" tab from the top of the Edit Quiz window to access the special access options.
  5. Under the heading "Special Access," select the "Add Users to Special Access" button.
  6. This will navigate you to the Special Access page of the selected quiz. From here, you can designate several special access criteria, including:
    • New start, end, and due dates
    • Timing overrides to provide a student with more time during a quiz attempt than is normally allowed by the quiz
    • Attempt overrides to provide a student with more attempts than is normally allowed by the quiz
  7. Once you have selected the criteria necessary, search for the student name you want to provide the override to in the search box under the heading "Users" and select the magnifying glass.
  8. Select the checkbox next to the student's name that you are giving the override to (you can select multiple names at this stage) and then select the "Add Special Access" button to save your changes.
