Introduction
This article reviews common technical issues that a user may have when entering an MS Teams meeting and guidance to troubleshoot the concern. If these suggestions do not work, there may be another underlying issue and you should contact the IT Service Desk.
Limited Functions in a Meeting
If you are missing or have limited functions in a meeting, it may be due to the web browser that you entered the meeting with. To fix this issue, you need to:
Cannot Login to MS Teams Account
If you are attempting to login to the MS Teams app and you are getting an error message when inputting your Empire State University username and password information, you need to change your password.
Camera and/or Microphone Not Working
If your camera and/or microphone is not working, you can try to leave and re-enter the meeting using the same “Join” link that you were originally sent.
In the lobby, check that your microphone and camera are set to the hardware that you want or need to use (the default setting is your device).
- Please Note: Web browsers may require you to “Allow” the browser permission to use your hardware. This can appear in a pop-up at the top of the browser. If pop-ups are blocked on your device, click on the “Site Identity” icon in the address bar (it looks like a padlock) to see if your browser is set to “Allow” your hardware.

Cannot Assign Participants to a Breakout Room
The participant who cannot be assigned to a Breakout Room should update or reinstall their MS Teams app.
For users on a desktop device:
- Leave the meeting.
- Click on the “Profile” icon at the top of the main Teams app.
- Select “Check for updates” from the drop-down and run updates.
- Re-enter the meeting using the original invitation link.
For users on a mobile device:
- Download and reinstall the Microsoft Teams App from the iOS App Store or Google Play Store.
- Re-enter the meeting using the original invitation link.
